Individual therapy
focuses on sex specific issues as well as other related treatment issues. Each young man meets with an individual therapist a minimum of one session per week. The therapist custom designs treatment assignments and monitors progress on a week-by-week basis, updating and modifying the treatment plan as needed. Group therapy sessions are conducted by a male and female team of psychotherapists and focus specifically on relevant treatment issues. The groups are intensive and incorporate innovative therapeutic techniques aimed at facilitating change within a supportive and positive peer environment. Group therapyhas been determined by current research to be the most effective means of working with adolescents, and, at the BRTC, each youth participates in a minimum of four group therapy sessions a week. Family therapy
focuses on issues specific to each youth’s family and includes the family's response to treatment concerns, family communication and relationship building, boundary clarification, risk management, and self-regulation strategies. The BRTC staff strongly supports family therapy sessions and arranges them as appropriate, given each family's time constraints and travel issues. The youth's therapist contacts the individual family weekly by phone. Family therapy sessions including the youth are scheduled usually every other week, and are directed by the therapist. Multi-family group therapy in the form of "family retreats" are held every three months at BRTC and provide families with the opportunity to address treatment issues and foster an atmosphere of hope, support, and change. Parent education curriculumoffers parents educational materials relevant to treatment issues. Parents participate in "Parent Only" groups during family retreats. The parent only groups focus on developing emotional support from others, strengthen parenting skills, gaining awareness and understanding, and teaching specialized interventions to improve treatment outcomes. Parental consultation with therapists weekly by telephone facilitates parental interest and involvement in a youth's treatment progress. Psychological and Educational evaluations
are available as necessary for the assessment of treatment needs. Each youth will take a pre and post psychological evaluation to measure progress. Psychiatric consultfor prescribing medication is available on an individual basis. Regularly scheduled laboratory work and consultation with a psychiatrist are available as required for medication management and psychiatric evaluations. Therapeutic polygraphsare arranged as a means of assessing honesty in treatment and for expediting the treatment process. Transition planningTransition planning and evaluation of step-down community residential placement is available based on individual needs. The goal of the transition services is to develop a support network for each young man in order to ensure successful transition from the BRTC to a new life.
